Aristolochic acids are the active ingredients responsible for the hepatoxicity and renal toxicity of the Oriental herb Aristolochic fangchi. They form DNA adducts in renal tissue and is associated with urothelial carcinoma formation. They are known to induce hepatic nodules and forestomach tumors in rats. Aristolochic acid A activates rats genes in tumors.
