VitalSense Integrated Physiological Monitor
Go Wireless with VitalSense!
Monitor your subjects without the nuisance of wires or probes that can get tangled, snagged, pulled at and pulled off. VitalSense wireless sensors free your subjects and provide a more convenient, reliable and satisfying solution. The VitalSense System includes wireless sensors, a small monitor, software and accessories. VitalSense is designed to be effective for monitoring temperature, in active or inactive subjects and in indoor and outdoor environments such as:
- Clinical trials
- Sports Medicine Research
- Exercise Physiology
- Military medicine/military training
- Pre- or post-operative outpatient monitoring
- Healthcare telemedicine
- Hazardous occupations
VitalSense monitors can receive transmissions from multiple miniature, wireless, temperature sensors. Core temperature is sensed by the ingestible capsule. Dermal temperatures are recorded from hypoallergenic, non-irritating, adhesive dermal patches.
Both sensor types are disposable, but designed for multi-day use under demanding physical and environmental conditions. Both types of sensors use low-power radio frequency transmissions to communicate with the Monitor.

Temperature Sensors
VitalSense offers two types of temperature monitoring - core body and skin temperature. The new technology employed by VitalSense disposable telemetric sensors provides accurate data that can be transmitted and logged continuously for up to 10 days. The unique ID of each sensor is automatically identified by the VitalSense monitor to avoid cross-talk among sensors on the same subject or in close proximity.
Core body temperature (CBT) is measured by an ingestible, biocompatible, and easy to swallow capsule that is disposable. Skin temperature is measured by a hypoallergenic and water-resistent dermal patch that is also disposable.
Ambient skin temperature is measured with the dermal patch that can be placed at many different locations on the body to record skin temperature
VitalSense-XHR Heart Rate & Respiration Sensor
The VitalSense-XHR sensor is an innovative, compact device that wirelessly transmits Heart Rate and Respiration Rate to the VitalSense telemetric physiological monitoring system. This state-of-the-art sensor enables researchers to monitor heart rate and respiratory rate on ambulatory subjects.
The XHR is a chest-worn wireless physiological monitor that incorporates an ECG-signal processor. It attaches to two standard ECG pads or to a dry electrode band. The XHR senses heart rate and respiratory rate and transmits the data in near real time to the VitalSense monitor four times per minute. The monitor logs the data in nonvolatile memory.

Use with Other Devices
VitalSense functionality can be supplemented through the use of our Actical device. Caloric expenditure is calculated from movement recorded by the Actical device worn on the waist. Data from this device is transcribed to a format that allows both sets of data to be synchronized for an integrated analysis.
VitalSense Monitor
- Activates the sensors
- Tracks and records sensor data
- Displays data in a convenient numeric table or as a trend graph
- Functions as the computer interface
- Stores data in a nonvolatile memory
- Transfers data to PC
- Continuously logs data
- Monitors and tracks up to 10 sensors
- Designed for research, clinical and ambulatory applications
After sensor activation, each sensor transmits its first value to the VitalSense Monitor within 15 seconds and then takes another reading every 15 seconds. Transmission to the monitor occurs four times a minute on a transmission schedule that is synchronized with the monitor.
The subject wears the monitor which is then able to receive the sensor transmissions. The monitor logs and displays the data.
Ingestible Capsule
- Easily ingestible and disposable
- Comparable in size to a vitamin or a large gel capsule
The monitor is used to activate the capsule sensor. The capsule is swallowed with liquid. Transmission begins 15 seconds after activation and then occurs four times per minute. The capsule easily travels and passes through the GI tract without affecting bodily functions. Transmit time varies with individual; 12-48 hours is typical.

Dermal Temperature Patch
This superior temperature measurement solution can assist investigative researchers in the measurement of peripheral temperature. When used in association with ingestible capsules and heart rate sensors, peripheral temperature may be compared with core body temperature, heart rate, and activity. Integration of these parameters is important for the evaluation and treatment of many indications.
- Waterproof
- Hypoallergenic adhesive
- Smooth, comfortable and easy-to-use
- Battery life of 10 days following activation
The monitor is used to activate the dermal temperature patch. The dermal temperature patch can be placed at many different locations on the body to record skin temperature. Multiple dermal patches can be monitored simultaneously.
XHR Heart Rate and Respiration Rate Sensor
The VitalSense-XHR sensor is an innovative, compact device that wirelessly transmits Heart Rate and Respiration Rate to the VitalSense telemetric physiological monitoring system. The monitor is used to activate the state-of-the-art XHR sensor enabling researchers to monitor heart rate and respiratory rate on ambulatory subjects. Data is transferred near real time to the monitor four times per minute.

Medic Mode
Medic Mode is a special function that enables the VitalSense monitor to detect and record signals from any VitalSense sensor that is within reception range. It displays and records sensor ID, time stamp and temperature value for each sensor transmission that is detected.
Software and Analysis
The VitalSense application program is simple-to-use software utility that communicates with the VitalSense Monitor via an RS-232 cable. With this link, a variety of functions can be accomplished:
- Setup of the VitalSense Monitor
- Setup and initialization of the sensors
- Real-time temperature data monitoring
- Retrieval of recorded data from the VitalSense Monitor
Recorded Data Analysis Example The VitalSense application program automatically extracts your data to an Excel file type for easy graphing and analysis. It can also be combined with other data, for a more complete analysis of your subjects.
