Actins are ubiquitous globular and highly conserved proteins that are involved in various types of cell motility, structure, and integrity. Three main groups of actin isoforms, alpha, beta and gamma have been identified. The alpha actins are found in muscle tissues and are a major constituent of the contractile apparatus. The beta and gamma actins co-exist in most cell types as components of the cytoskeleton, and as mediators of internal cell motility. ACTB is a major constituent of the contractile apparatus and one of the two nonmuscle cytoskeletal actins. Polymerization of globular actin (G-actin) leads to a structural filament (F-actin) in the form of a two-stranded helix. Each actin can bind to 4 others.

Sorbitol dehydrogenase, also known as L-iditol 2-dehydrogenase and SORD, is a member of the zinc-containing alcohol dehydrogenase family. SORD exsits in a homotetramer and binds one zinc ion per subunit. SORD is expressed in kidney and epithelial cells of both benign and malignant prostate tissue. SORD can converts sorbitol to fructose and catalyzes the interconversion of polyols and their corresponding ketoses, and together with aldose reductase to make up the sorbitol pathway. SORD is up-regulated by androgens and down-regulated by castration. SORD may play a role in the sperm motility by providing an energetic source for sperm.

Syntenin-1 is a molecule linking syndecan-mediated signaling to the cytoskeleton. Syntenin-1 is primarily localized to membrane-associated adherens junctions and focal adhesions but also found at the endoplasmic reticulum and nucleus. The syntenin protein contains tandemly repeated PDZ domains that bind the cytoplasmic, C-terminal domains of a variety of transmembrane proteins. Syntenin-1 may affect cytoskeletal-membrane organization, cell adhesion, protein trafficking, and the activation of transcription factors. It seems to function as an adapter protein, in adherens junctions may function to couple syndecans to cytoskeletal proteins or signaling components. Syntenin-1 seems to couple transcription factor SOX4 to the IL-5 receptor (IL5RA) and play a role in vesicular trafficking.
